          <h1>Commutation for pregnancy: death sentences for pregnant women are converted into imprisonment for life under the statute.</h1> Section 456 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 provides that if a woman sentenced to death is found to be pregnant, the death sentence shall be commuted to imprisonment for life, directing the judicial authority to substitute life imprisonment in place of execution where pregnancy is established.
