Police report on completion of investigation requires prescribed contents, prompt forwarding to magistrate and victim communication. On completion the officer in charge must forward a police report in prescribed form to a Magistrate empowered to take cognizance, stating the parties, nature of information, persons acquainted with the circumstances, whether an offence appears to have been committed and by whom, arrest and custody particulars, attachment of medical reports where relevant, and chain-of-custody details for electronic devices. The officer must inform the informant or victim of investigation progress and communicate action taken to the person who first gave the information. In cases requiring cognizance on police report, prosecution documents and proposed witness statements must accompany the report, and limited non-disclosure of irrelevant or prejudicial statement parts may be requested.
