Police inquiry into deaths: immediate notification, scene investigation, prompt reporting, and medical examination where indicated. Police must immediately notify the nearest Executive Magistrate empowered to hold inquests and, unless directed otherwise, proceed to the place of death to investigate in the presence of two or more respectable inhabitants, draw up a signed report describing apparent cause of death and injuries, and forward that report to the District or Sub-divisional Magistrate within twenty-four hours. Where specified circumstances arise or doubt exists as to cause of death, and subject to State rules and practical considerations, the police shall forward the body for medical examination to a Civil Surgeon or other qualified medical appointee.
