Reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes requires proportional allocation in House of the People based on census.
Seats in the House of the People are reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, including a distinct category for Scheduled Tribes in the autonomous districts of Assam. Reserved seats in each State or Union territory must, as nearly as may be, be proportional to the population of the respective class in that territory relative to total population. For the autonomous districts of Assam, reserved seats must not be less than the proportion their population bears to the State. 'Population' means the population as ascertained at the last preceding census whose relevant figures have been published.
