Governors Must Convene State Legislatures Every Six Months Under Article 174 of the Indian Constitution
Article 174 of the Indian Constitution governs State Legislature sessions. The Governor must summon each House at appropriate times, ensuring no more than six months elapse between sessions. The Governor has authority to prorogue either House and dissolve the Legislative Assembly. This provision was amended in 1951; the original text required legislatures to meet at least twice yearly and granted the Governor additional powers to summon Houses at discretion, alongside the prorogation and dissolution powers maintained in the current version.
