Territorial composition of states and union territories defined by First Schedule, via references to reorganisation legislation. The First Schedule identifies the territorial composition of States and separately of Union Territories by reference to the territory comprised in pre Constitution provinces or Chief Commissioner's Provinces and by cross reference to subsequent reorganisation, transfer, merger and amendment statutes; it functions under Articles 1 and 4 as the constitutional register of territories and records statutory modifications to those territorial extents.
