EOUs No Longer Need Customs Warehousing, Bond Requirement Still in Effect Post-August 2016 for Compliance.
Export Oriented Units (EOUs) previously needed to operate as Customs bonded warehouses under the Customs Act, with manufacturing activities conducted under customs bond, incurring charges for officers on a cost recovery basis. Certain units, such as those in aquaculture and floriculture, were exempt from bonding with safeguards to prevent misuse of duty-free benefits. To enhance the ease of doing business and support the Make in India initiative, the requirement for EOUs to comply with warehousing provisions was removed effective 13th August 2016. Despite this, EOUs must still execute a multipurpose bond with jurisdictional Customs and Central Excise officers.
