SEZs can be set up by government or authorized developers; proposals need Board of Approval and State Government consent.
Special Economic Zones (SEZs) can be established by the Central or State Government or any authorized person, termed as Developer or Co-developer, under the SEZ Act. A Co-developer can provide infrastructure facilities in SEZs with Board of Approval consent. State Governments must forward SEZ proposals to the Board of Approval within 45 days. Proposals approved directly by the Board require State Government concurrence within six months. The Board may approve or modify proposals based on SEZ Act provisions and SEZ Rules. Existing SEZs are considered multi-sector SEZs.
