Mine rescue room requirements mandate surface facilities, qualified staffing, and emergency equipment for below ground operations. A rescue room must be established on the surface close to the mine entrance at below ground mines employing more than 100 persons where no rescue station exists within 35 kms. One rescue room may serve several mines of the same employer if the combined below ground workforce does not exceed 5000 and the mines are within 35 kms by road. Where the combined workforce exceeds 5000, the rescue room may function as a rescue station only if it has additional rescue apparatus and suitably qualified rescue-trained personnel. Each rescue room must have a qualified in-charge and at least one rescue-trained person must always be in attendance.
