Government-owned Nazul land differs from regularly acquired property, originating from confiscated estates during British rule
Nazul land refers to government-owned land that vested in the State for various reasons. The term originates from Arabic, meaning land annexed to the Crown. During British rule, immovable property of individuals, zamindars, nawabs and rajas that was confiscated rather than acquired through purchase became known as Nazul property. In old Urdu records, such land was documented as 'Jaidad Munzabta.' The Legal Glossary defines Nazul as 'Rajbhoomi' or government land, distinguishing it from property obtained through normal acquisition or purchase processes.
