Alliance denotes a relation or union formed by persons or families through intermarriage (affinity), and in international law a union or association of two or more states created by league or treaty for joint prosecution of war (offensive alliance) or mutual assistance and protection (defensive alliance); it also refers to the league or treaty forming the association and the act of confederating for those purposes.
