<h1>Harboring Offenders: Section 249 Outlines Penalties for Concealing Criminals, Exempts Spouses from Liability</h1> Section 249 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, addresses the offense of harboring an offender. It stipulates penalties for anyone who knowingly harbors or conceals an offender to shield them from legal punishment. If the concealed offense is punishable by death, the harborer faces up to five years of imprisonment and a fine. For offenses punishable by life imprisonment or up to ten years, the penalty is up to three years of imprisonment and a fine. Lesser offenses carry a penalty of imprisonment up to one-fourth of the maximum term for the offense, a fine, or both. The section excludes harboring by a spouse.
