Attempt to commit offence punishable by imprisonment: attracts reduced maximum imprisonment or fine under the statute. Where no specific penalty is provided, a person who attempts to commit an offence punishable with imprisonment for life or imprisonment, and in such attempt does any act towards its commission, is punishable with the imprisonment provided for that offence for a reduced maximum term, or with the fine provided for the offence, or with both.
