DGFT Can Suspend or Cancel IEC for Violating Trade Laws or Policies, Affecting Trade Relations or Reputation
Under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act 1992, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has the authority to suspend or cancel an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) Number if a person contravenes relevant laws, rules, or foreign trade policies. This action can be taken if the import or export activities harm India's trade relations, the interests of other traders, or the country's reputation. Before suspension or cancellation, the concerned party must be notified and given an opportunity to respond. Once an IEC is suspended or canceled, the individual cannot import or export without a special license from the DGFT.
