India Lifts Export Restrictions on Onions, Allowing Free Trade Except for Cut or Powdered Varieties
The Government of India has amended the export policy for onions, effective immediately, under the Foreign Trade Policy 2009-2014. The amendment, made by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, changes the export status of onions from 'STE' (State Trading Enterprise) to 'Free,' allowing unrestricted export of all onion varieties, including Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram onions, except those cut, sliced, or in powder form. This change is reflected in Chapter 7 of Schedule 2 of the ITC(HS) Classification of Export & Import Items, and the related note has been deleted.
