India Amends Trade Policy to Allow Limited Non-Basmati Rice Exports to Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, and Cameroon
The Central Government has amended its foreign trade policy to allow the export of non-basmati rice to Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, and Cameroon, despite an existing export ban. The permitted quantities are 15,000 metric tons each for Nigeria, Senegal, and Ghana, and 10,000 metric tons for Cameroon. These exports must be conducted through the State Trading Corporation (STC) of India by July 30, 2009. The rice must contain at least 25% broken grains, and the STC must ensure that exports do not disrupt domestic rice prices, sourcing from multiple states in four tranches. Other provisions of the original notification remain unchanged.
