Government Amends Onion Export Policy: Mandates STEs, Quality Standards, and Minimum Export Price under Foreign Trade Policy 2004-2009
The Central Government, under the Foreign Trade Policy 2004-2009, has amended the export policy for onions in Table B of Schedule 2 of the ITC(HS) Classification. The revised policy applies to all varieties of onions, excluding those in powder form, and mandates export through specific State Trading Enterprises (STEs) such as NAFED and others. The export is allowed without a quantitative ceiling but must meet quality standards set by NAFED. A uniform service charge of 1% of the invoice value is applied, and a Minimum Export Price is enforced. Regular reporting to NAFED and the Department of Consumer Affairs is required.
