New Amendment Reserves Seats for Women in Parliament and State Assemblies; Effective Post-Delimitation Following Census.
Article 334A, introduced by the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023, mandates the reservation of seats for women in the House of the People, State Legislative Assemblies, and the Legislative Assembly of Delhi. This reservation will be implemented following a delimitation exercise based on the first census after the amendment's commencement. The reservation is set to expire 15 years after its implementation, unless extended by Parliament. The rotation of reserved seats will occur after each delimitation exercise as determined by Parliament. Existing representations remain unaffected until the current legislative bodies are dissolved.
