India Hits Back with Tariffs on 28 U.S. Products After U.S. Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Impact Exports.
The U.S. imposed additional tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum in March 2018, affecting global exports. As a result, India's steel exports to the U.S. decreased by 35% in the 2018-19 fiscal year, while aluminum exports increased by 14%. Despite ongoing trade discussions, the U.S. did not withdraw these tariffs. Consequently, India imposed retaliatory tariffs on 28 U.S. products, effective June 16, 2019, expected to result in an additional duty impact of approximately USD 217 million. This was reported by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in a Lok Sabha session.
