Steel import controls: compulsory quality compliance and SIMS registration required for specified steel products, with procedural exceptions.

Imports of steel and steel products must comply with the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2012; non compliant or substandard imports are prohibited. Certain items are now "free subject to compulsory registration under the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS)", requiring advance online submission and automatic registration in ICES; SIMS excludes air freight, covers multiple consignments per registration, applies to Advance Authorisation, DFIA and SEZ imports, and excludes returnable temporary or FOC racks. Wireless equipment import licensing has been eased to allow self declaration licences via the DoT "Saralsanchar" portal, with WPC guidance available.
