<h1>Reserved Seats for Scheduled Tribes in Northeast States: Constitution 57th Amendment Creates Special Provisions Under Article 332(3-A)</h1> The Constitution (57th Amendment) Act, 1987 inserts clause (3-A) to Article 332, establishing special provisions for reserved seats for Scheduled Tribes in Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland until readjustment after the first census post-2000. If all existing seats are held by Scheduled Tribe members, all seats except one shall be reserved; otherwise, the proportion of reserved seats shall not be less than the existing proportion. This amendment does not affect current representation until the dissolution of the existing Legislative Assemblies in these states. The Act came into force on September 21, 1987.
