India Revises Import Policy for Electrical Energy: License Required Except for SEZ Units Under Foreign Trade Policy 2009-2014
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has amended the import policy for electrical energy under the Foreign Trade Policy 2009-2014. As per Notification No. 09/2009-2014, dated 10th September 2009, the import of electrical energy is classified as 'Restricted,' requiring a license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Power, and Department of Commerce. However, imports from Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units are classified as 'Free.' This amendment aims to regulate the import of electrical energy in the public interest.
