India Updates Sugar Export Policy: Free Status Requires Registration; Preferential Quotas for EU/USA; Organic Sugar Rules Revised
The Government of India has amended the export policy for sugar under Chapter 17 of the ITC(HS) Classification of Export and Import Items. Sugar exports are now classified as 'free,' requiring prior quantity registration with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Preferential quota sugar exports to the EU and USA are permitted through a designated corporation, subject to DGFT's quantitative limits. Pharmaceutical and specialty sugars are exempt from registration. Organic sugar exports of up to 10,000 MT annually must be certified and registered with APEDA. Exports under Advance Authorization no longer require a Release Order from the Directorate of Sugar.
