India's GST Launch: Dual Model to Replace State and Central Taxes with Nationwide Computerization by April 2010.
The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was proposed in the 2006-2007 budget, with implementation set for April 1, 2010. The GST aims to replace various Central and State taxes, not just the Central Sales Tax (CST). A dual GST model, comprising Central and State GST, has been agreed upon by the Central Government and States, following consultations. To support this implementation, a nationwide computerization project, Tax Information Exchange System (TINXSYS), is being funded equally by the Government of India and States. The 2009-10 budget includes Rs. 408 crore for computerization projects in State Commercial Taxes Departments.
