      Thane, Aug 11 (PTI) The Navi Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a senior Sales Tax official for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 8 lakh from a scrap trader to close a Goods and Services Tax (GST) inquiry.

      Deepak Ramchandra Kshirsagar (56), the accused, was serving as Assistant Commissioner of Sales Tax, Raigad Division, CBD Belapur, at the time of the offense. He was recently transferred as Deputy Commissioner (Class-1), Sales Tax Department, Mazgaon, Mumbai.

      As per the complainant, he received a GST show-cause notice under Kshirsagar's signature on February 8, 2025. When he met Kshirsagar on May 20, 2026, to resolve the matter, the officer allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh to close the investigation.

      After the trader lodged a complaint with the ACB, officials approached Kshirsagar posing as middlemen. After 'negotiations', the Sales Tax officer allegedly agreed to accept Rs 8 lakh for closing the case.

      The ACB then registered a case at the CBD Belapur Police Station under the Prevention of Corruption Act and arrested Kshirsagar.

      Further probe was on, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharmaraj Sonke.

      The ACB has appealed to people to report any instances of government officials demanding bribes by calling the toll-free helpline 1064. PTI COR KRK
