India, Canada near USD 2.8 billion, 10-year uranium supply deal within civil nuclear cooperation, eye trade boost
India and Canada are reportedly close to finalising a USD 2.8 billion, 10-year uranium supply agreement as part of their longstanding civil nuclear cooperation framework. The Indian opposition party asserts this prospective deal is legally and politically enabled by the 2008 Indo-US civil nuclear agreement, which was concluded under a previous government despite opposition at the time. Recent high-level talks between the current Indian and Canadian heads of government also covered defence, space, energy and trade, with a decision to launch negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement aimed at doubling bilateral trade by 2030. The uranium would be supplied by a Canadian corporation under the export contract.
