Police oppose bail for activists accused under UAPA and IPC, alleging plotted 'regime change' disguised as protest
The Delhi Police opposed bail applications in the Supreme Court by several activists charged under the UAPA and IPC in connection with the February 2020 riots, alleging a premeditated 'regime change operation' disguised as peaceful protest aimed at undermining sovereignty and communal harmony. In an affidavit the police said ocular, documentary and technical evidence shows the activists conspired to provoke nationwide communal violence, timed to coincide with a foreign leader's visit to attract international media. The police argued the offences are grave, that the accused delayed trial proceedings, that material witnesses number about 100-150, and that 'jail and not bail' is warranted.
