Wholesale inflation slows to 0.13% in September as food deflation and lower energy push outlook toward possible policy cut
Wholesale price inflation eased to 0.13% in September, down from 0.52% in August, driven by deflation in food articles (-5.22%, vegetables -24.41%) and lower energy costs; manufactured products inflation slowed to 2.33% while fuel and power fell 2.58%. Analysts noted core inflation rose to 1.9%-a 31-month high-led by sharp jewellery price gains, and wholesale inflation was flat at 0.02% in Q2 FY26, an eight-quarter low. Forecasts expect wholesale deflation around 0.5% in October and a muted near-term inflation trajectory, with the potential for another 25 bps policy cut contingent on incoming data. The central bank has held rates at 5.5% and retail inflation is at 1.5%.
