The Board of Approval of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) met on 22nd September 2008 to consider proposals for setting up of Special Economic Zones and also to approve other miscellaneous requests pertaining to SEZs.

In this meeting, 35 proposals for setting up of SEZs, including 6 proposals for conversion of in-principle approvals in to formal approvals were considered The Board recommended grant of 18 Formal approvals and 10 In-Principle Approvals.

SEZ approvals expand sectoral economic zones, enabling formal and in-principle project clearances for developers. The Board of Approval for Special Economic Zones recommended grant of formal approvals and in-principle approvals after considering 35 proposals, including conversions from in-principle to formal status. The Board recommended 18 formal approvals across sectors such as aluminium, biotechnology, IT/ITES, electronics hardware, engineering, steel and mineral-based industries, and multi-product and multi-service SEZs, and recommended 10 in-principle approvals for multi-product, multi-service, heavy engineering, agro and food processing, airport-based, textile park, building materials and auto components SEZs, naming sponsoring developers and states.
