President impeached overnight; interim legislative leader sworn in, pledges security and reconciliation as prosecutors seek travel ban
Peru's Congress overnight impeached the sitting president by an overwhelming vote, citing the administration's failure to curb rampant crime after protests and a recent concert shooting; the president did not appear to defend herself and was removed with 124 votes. With no vice president available-she had succeeded a prior impeached leader-the presidency passed to the head of Congress, a 38-year-old congressional leader who was sworn in as interim president and pledges reconciliation and security measures ahead of national elections next April. The Attorney General has sought to bar the ousted president from leaving the country while probing alleged money laundering and influence-peddling.
