Pharma owner arrested after over 20 child deaths linked to contaminated cough syrup; regulator recalls brands, probes safety
A pharmaceutical company owner was arrested after more than 20 pediatric deaths were linked to a contaminated cough syrup; the central drug regulator notified the WHO and ordered recalls of three syrup brands and cessation of their production. Regulators initiated nationwide testing, inspections and audits, issued show-cause notices, and found alleged unhygienic storage and noncompliance with batch testing and CAPA guidelines; two local drug inspectors were suspended. A state police SIT is investigating potential criminal liability for manufacture and distribution of adulterated drugs, and a PIL seeking a court-monitored probe and systemic drug-safety reforms is scheduled for hearing before the Supreme Court.
