Government pushes pension reforms to widen coverage for informal and gig workers with Pension Sakhis, auto-enrolment, portability
The finance minister urged regulatory agencies to expand pension coverage for informal, self-employed and gig workers by streamlining onboarding, local-language interfaces and doorstep e-KYC, and proposed training women as incentivised 'Pension Sakhis' to boost enrolment and continuity. Reforms include workplace auto-enrolment, contribution protection during caregiving, micro auto-debits, and financial literacy drives. A recently established inter-regulatory forum will harmonise standards across pension products, enhance consumer protection and grievance redressal, and implement a Multiple Scheme Framework permitting greater equity exposure and portability while capping cost ratios to preserve fiscal sustainability.
