Fuel-cell supplier chosen as lead partner for 12 MW PEM system powering ammonia-fuelled LR2 tanker concept
A fuel-cell supplier has been selected as lead technology partner in a joint development project to power an ammonia-fuelled LR2 tanker concept using a 12 MW PEM fuel cell system composed of six 2 MW modules. A classification society has granted an Approval in Principle to the shipowner and shipbuilder's design, confirming technical viability and alignment with safety and regulatory standards. The design integrates the PEM system with a third-party ammonia cracking unit to provide hydrogen for propulsion, cargo operations and hotel loads, and establishes safety and regulatory concepts for scaling zero-emission commercial shipping.
