Regional GST receipts jump over 700% and taxpayers rise as September 22 reforms aim to lower taxes on key goods
State authorities reported that regional GST receipts rose over 700% from Rs 227 crore in 2017-18 to about Rs 1,900 crore in 2023-24, accompanied by an increase in registered taxpayers from 7,365 to 18,477 by mid-2025. The statement attributed growth to digital access, simplified registration, and formalisation of small businesses. Revenues were said to finance infrastructure, health, education and welfare. The government announced implementation of GST reforms on September 22, asserting anticipated legal and economic effects including lower tax incidence on medicines, farm machinery, handicrafts and tourism services.
