Resident duped of Rs 2.88 crore in 'virtual arrest' WhatsApp video scam; police invoke Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and IT Act
A resident was allegedly defrauded of Rs 2.88 crore in a 'virtual arrest' cyber scam where fraudsters impersonated law enforcement, staged continuous WhatsApp video custody and a fake court proceeding to coerce transfers and jewellery sales; transfers occurred repeatedly over several weeks and the perpetrators later warned the victim against disclosure. Local police recorded the victim's statement, registered offences under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, and are investigating, seeking to freeze implicated bank accounts, trace the perpetrators' true identities (suspect names are believed to be bogus) and recover the funds.
