Customs destroy 550,000+ foreign-made cigarettes, alcohol and e-cigarettes over unpaid duties, mislabelling and missing health warnings under Customs rules
Customs authorities destroyed more than 5.5 lakh foreign-origin cigarette sticks and assorted alcohol and e-cigarettes valued at about Rs 12.5 crore after seizing the consignment in Gummidipoondi, Tamil Nadu. The goods allegedly entered without payment of customs duties and GST, were mislabelled by smuggling syndicates, and lacked mandatory pictorial health warnings required by health ministry notifications. Citing noncompliance with statutory packaging and tax laws, the items were destroyed in accordance with Customs rules following the August seizure as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal imports.
