<h1>Net Direct Tax Collections Surge 46.95% in First Four Months of Fiscal Year 2008, Driven by Improved Compliance.</h1> Net direct tax collections in the first four months of the fiscal year up to July 2008 increased by 46.95% to Rs.71,648 crore from Rs.48,756 crore. Corporate taxes grew by 50.08% and personal income tax by 42.82%. Fringe Benefit Tax rose by 44.34%, Securities Transaction Tax by 15.46%, and Banking Cash Transaction Tax by 33.75%. Notable regional tax growth was observed in Delhi (76.40%) and Nagpur (77.80%). Growth was largely driven by a 44.56% increase in tax deducted/collected at source, attributed to improved tax education and compliance. The cost of tax collection decreased to 0.54% in 2007-08.
