Ban on diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol over 15 years under environmental rule
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned the use of diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old in the National Capital Region (NCR), as per its 2015 order. The government has not imposed this ban; rather, it has implemented a Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernization Program to phase out unfit and polluting vehicles in an environmentally friendly manner. Under this policy, vehicle fitness is certified by Automated Testing Stations for private vehicles outside the NCR. Government-owned vehicles are subject to a 15-year usage limit. Additionally, 13,795 black spots have been identified on national highways, with short-term and long-term rectifications largely completed. The Dehradun-Delhi Access Controlled Highway project is scheduled for completion by October 2025.
