Nearly half of Rs 243 crore allocated for civilian border bunkers remains unused after five years
The administration of a northern border region has left nearly half of central government funds allocated for civilian bunkers unused over five years. An RTI application revealed that of Rs 242.77 crore allocated between 2020-25 for underground bunkers along the international border, 46.58% remains unspent. Only Rs 129.67 crore was utilized despite ongoing security concerns and cross-border shelling incidents. The funds were distributed across eight border districts, with one district showing highest utilization at Rs 78.05 crore. Recent military operations and civilian casualties have renewed calls for accelerated bunker construction to protect border residents.
