Tamil Nadu seeks central intervention as mango prices crash below Rs 5 per kg, requests Market Intervention Scheme implementation
Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister wrote to the Prime Minister seeking intervention for mango farmers facing severe price drops, with mangoes selling below Rs 5 per kilogram due to increased yield and reduced procurement by pulp manufacturers. The state requested implementation of the Market Intervention Scheme under PM-AASHA, proposing Rs 2,766 per ton compensation to farmers with 50:50 cost sharing between Centre and state, estimated at Rs 62.93 crore. Additional requests included reducing GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%, ensuring FSSAI compliance by manufacturers, and directing central agencies to procure at fair prices. Tamil Nadu produces 9.49 lakh tons of mangoes from 1.46 lakh hectares.
