India's Rupee Gains 30 Paise Against US Dollar as Inflation Drops to Multi-Year Lows
The rupee strengthened for the second consecutive session, gaining 30 paise to close at 85.80 against the US dollar on Tuesday. This appreciation was driven by sharp rises in equity markets, weakness in the American currency, lower global crude prices, favorable domestic inflation data, and foreign fund inflows. The domestic currency opened at 85.85 and reached an intraday high of 85.59. Wholesale price inflation fell to a 6-month low of 2.05% in March, while retail inflation dipped to a nearly six-year low of 3.34%. The dollar index traded at 99.38, while Brent crude declined to a four-year low of $64.81 per barrel.
