Government Removes Fees for PPF Nominee Changes, Banking Amendment Bill Allows Up to Four Nominees for Bank Deposits
The government has eliminated fees for updating or adding nominees to Public Provident Fund (PPF) accounts through a Gazette Notification dated April 2, 2025. This change to the Government Savings Promotion General Rules 2018 removes the previous Rs 50 fee for nomination changes in small savings schemes. The recently passed Banking Amendment Bill 2025 allows up to four nominees for bank deposits, items in safe custody, and safety lockers. The bill also increases the definition of 'substantial interest' in a bank from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 2 crore and extends cooperative bank directors' tenure from 8 to 10 years.
