Judge Blocks Trump Administration's Plan to End Temporary Protected Status for 350,000 Venezuelans
A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration's plans to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans scheduled to expire April 7. Judge Edward Chen ruled that ending TPS would cause irreparable harm to beneficiaries and cost the US billions in economic activity. The judge found the government failed to show any countervailing harm in continuing protections and stated the plaintiffs would likely succeed in proving the Homeland Security Secretary's actions were unauthorized, arbitrary, and potentially motivated by unconstitutional bias. The ruling applies nationally. The administration had also announced plans to end TPS for an additional 250,000 Venezuelans in September and revoke protections for over 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.
