He currently serves as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his designation, which follows the recent appointment of the previous Finance Secretary as the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Conventionally, the senior-most secretary in the Union Finance Ministry assumes the role of Finance Secretary.
