Farmers Protest Onion Price Drop, Demand Removal of Minimum Export Price at Major Market
Around 15 onion farmers in Nashik protested atop a water tank against the decline in onion prices at the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee, Asia's largest wholesale onion market. The farmers demanded the removal of the minimum export price (MEP) on onions, citing a price drop of Rs 300-500 per quintal over five days. On the protest day, red onions averaged Rs 1,700 per quintal, and summer crop onions Rs 1,800, compared to Rs 2,250-2,300 previously. The protest ended after assurances from the state agriculture minister that the issue would be addressed in the legislative Budget Session.
