Women from Fishing Community Break Barriers as Crane Operators at Vizhinjam Port, Creating New Job Opportunities
The Vizhinjam deep-sea port in Kerala has become a significant employment hub for women, particularly from the local fishing community, by hiring them to operate its advanced automated CRMG cranes. This initiative marks a breakthrough in a traditionally male-dominated field. Nine women, including seven from the fishing community that previously protested against the port's construction, now work as crane operators. These women, mostly BSc graduates, have found stable income and career opportunities. The port, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, is set to be fully operational by 2028, enhancing regional economic prospects.
