Nine Women from Local Fishing Community Operate Automated Cranes at Vizhinjam Port, Pioneering Gender Equality in India
The Vizhinjam deep-sea port in Kerala, India's mega transshipment terminal, has made strides by employing nine women, primarily from the local fishing community, to operate its automated Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry (CRMG) cranes. This marks the first instance in India where women operate such machinery. The initiative provides these women, many of whom are BSc graduates and first-time earners, with financial stability. Despite initial protests from the fishing community over unmet demands, the port's development continues, with full operations expected by 2028. The project is a public-private partnership with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd.
