286 Lions, 456 Leopards Died in 2 Years; Govt Boosts Safety Measures to Prevent Unnatural Fatalities
In Gujarat, 286 lions, including 143 cubs, and 456 leopards, including 140 cubs, died over the past two years, with 58 lion and 153 leopard deaths attributed to unnatural causes such as vehicle collisions and drowning. The state, home to the last Asiatic lions, reported 121 lion deaths in 2023 and 165 in 2024. To address these issues, the government has implemented measures like appointing veterinary doctors, providing ambulance services, and enhancing safety infrastructure around wildlife habitats, including speed-breakers, signboards, and fences, to prevent further unnatural fatalities.
