India Boosts Russian Oil Imports to 40% Amid Sanctions, Fuels EU, G7 Markets with Refined Products
India, the third-largest oil consumer globally, imported Russian crude oil worth 49 billion euros in the third year of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Initially sourcing oil from the Middle East, India shifted to Russian oil due to significant discounts amid Western sanctions on Russia. This shift increased Russian oil imports from less than 1% to 40% of India's total imports. Alongside China and Turkey, India accounted for 74% of Russia's fossil fuel revenue. Indian refineries processed Russian crude into fuels exported to Europe and G7 countries, with the EU being the largest importer of these products.
