India Prepares for 270 GW Peak Power Demand; May Invoke Section 11 of Electricity Act for Supply Assurance
India is prepared to meet a peak power demand of 270 GW this summer, with plans to mandate thermal plants, especially those using imported coal, to operate at full capacity if necessary. The country has sufficient coal stocks for 21 days of electricity generation and may invoke Section 11 of the Electricity Act to ensure supply. The blending of biomass pellets in coal plants will increase to 7% by April 2025. The carbon market will launch in mid-2026, and nuclear power capacity is set to double by 2030. Power distribution companies have reduced outstanding dues, and electricity supply has significantly improved. An undersea transmission line to Dubai and 1 lakh EV charging stations are planned.
